When people think of museums in Amsterdam, they usually head straight to the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum.
But if you’re looking for something quieter, more elegant, and a little less crowded, I highly recommend visiting Huis Willet-Holthuysen.
Located along one of Amsterdam’s historic canals, this beautifully preserved mansion offers a glimpse into the life of a wealthy 19th-century Amsterdam family.
And while the historic interiors are impressive, my favorite part is actually the garden.
Especially from spring through autumn, the hidden courtyard garden becomes one of the most peaceful spots in the city.

A Hidden Mansion Along Amsterdam’s Canals

Huis Willet-Holthuysen is a former canal house that belonged to Abraham Willet and Louisa Holthuysen, a wealthy Amsterdam couple.
After Louisa’s death, the house was donated to the city and later transformed into a museum.
Today, visitors can walk through the beautifully restored rooms and experience what life was like for Amsterdam’s upper class during the 19th century.
Unlike many museums in Amsterdam, the atmosphere here feels surprisingly intimate.
It almost feels as if the owners have just stepped out for the afternoon.
Step Inside a 19th-Century Amsterdam Home

One of the highlights of the museum is seeing the original living spaces.
You can explore:
- Elegant reception rooms
- A grand dining room
- Historic furniture
- Decorative art and paintings
The rooms have been carefully restored to reflect how the family once lived.
Instead of simply looking at objects behind glass, you’re walking through an actual home.
The Beautiful Hidden Garden

This is the reason I think Huis Willet-Holthuysen deserves more attention.
Behind the mansion is a beautifully maintained formal garden that many visitors don’t expect to find.
During spring and summer, flowers bloom throughout the garden and everything feels incredibly peaceful.
The contrast between the busy streets outside and the quiet garden inside is remarkable.
It’s one of those places where you can easily spend extra time just sitting and enjoying the atmosphere.
If you visit between April and October, don’t rush through this section.
For me, the garden was every bit as memorable as the museum itself.
A Different Side of Amsterdam

Many Amsterdam attractions focus on art, history, or famous landmarks.
Huis Willet-Holthuysen offers something slightly different.
It shows what daily life looked like inside a wealthy canal house.
You get to experience:
- Historic interiors
- Canal house architecture
- Decorative arts
- A traditional Dutch city garden
It’s a wonderful choice if you’ve already visited the major museums and want to discover something less touristy.
