【For Residents in the Netherlands】Rent a Bike Instantly with Your OV-Chipkaart! How to Use the Super Convenient OV-fiets

Life hack

When it comes to getting around in the Netherlands, bicycles are king.

From kids to seniors — even former Prime Minister Rutte — everyone relies on their bikes for commuting, school runs, and quick outings.

Many people have their own bikes, but have you ever found yourself in another city thinking, “I wish I had my bike right now…”?

That’s where OV-fiets comes in handy — a bike rental service that lets you rent a bike using your Personal OV-chipkaart, for just €4.65 per day!

What is OV-fiets?

OV-fiets is a rental bike service offered by Dutch public transport providers like NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen).
It’s available at most major stations throughout the country, and you can rent a bike without any reservation — just tap your OV-chipkaart and go!
Even better, if you’re registered for NS’s free subscription, you can rent up to two bikes at once — perfect for outings with friends or family.

How Do You Rent One?

There are over 300 OV-fiets stations across the Netherlands, with over 400,000 bikes available.
In 2022, a new model was introduced that lets you lock and unlock the bike directly with your OV-chipkaart — making it even more user-friendly.

Where Can You Rent One?

OV-fiets bikes are available at stations near most major train stops.
You can use the NS app or the official site to find the nearest OV-fiets station and check bike availability in real time.
Currently, both new and older bike models are in use — but in this guide, we’ll walk you through how to use the new model.

All You Need is Your OV-Chipkaart

To rent an OV-fiets, you’ll need a Personal OV-chipkaart with a photo.
Anonymous cards (the blue ones) won’t work — so make sure you’re using the right one.

How to Start a Rental

At the OV-fiets station, simply pick a bike you like from the racks.
Be sure to check that it’s not flat, damaged, or otherwise broken.
To begin the rental, just tap your OV-chipkaart on the scanner located under the seat.
Once you hear the unlock sound, adjust the saddle height, and you’re ready to roll!

Want to Park Temporarily?

Parking during your rental is super simple.
Under the seat, there’s a scanner with a lock icon button:
•Press the lock button for 1 second to engage the ring lock (around the back wheel).
•Press and hold the lock button for 3 seconds to engage the chain lock.
When you’re ready to ride again, just tap your OV-chipkaart on the scanner to unlock the ring lock.
To remove the chain lock, press and hold the lock button for 3 seconds again.
Tip: Since all OV-fiets bikes look the same, it’s easy to lose track of which one you rented. Snap a photo of the bike’s ID number located just under the handlebar so you can easily find it later.

How to Return the Bike

To return your OV-fiets, bring it back to the same station where you rented it.
Park it at the OV-fiets area, press the lock button for 1 second to engage the ring lock — and that’s it!
The rental ends automatically once the bike is locked at the correct location.
The first time might feel a little uncertain (“Did I return it right…?”), but once you get the hang of it, the no-contact rental and return process feels super efficient.
Personally, I found it easy to use, and I’ll definitely be using it again!

Things to Keep in Mind (As of 2025)

Rental Period
You can use the same bike for up to 7 consecutive days.
If you don’t return it by Day 8, you’ll get a fine — so watch the clock!
Rental Fees
It’s €4.65 per 24 hours.
From Day 3 onward, there’s an extra €5 per day surcharge on top of the regular fee.
Return Location
You’re expected to return the bike to the same location you rented it from.
If you absolutely need to return it elsewhere, contact NS Customer Service in advance. This will incur a €10 additional fee.
Damage, Loss, or Theft
If your bike is damaged, lost, or stolen, you’ll be charged between €20 and €350, depending on the case.
In such cases, report it to NS Customer Service immediately.

What’s the Ride Like?

Since OV-fiets bikes are different from what you might usually ride, they can feel a bit unfamiliar at first.

Also, they use foot brakes, not hand brakes — so be prepared if you’re not used to that!

They’re designed for short city rides, so they’re not ideal for long-distance cycling.

From personal experience: after an hour or more without a break, your butt might start to hurt…

That said, the ease of renting with just a single tap makes it super convenient.

It really expands your mobility — and I plan to keep using it whenever I travel within the Netherlands!
